New Electricity Rate Arrives in Puerto Rico, As Warned by IEEFA

Published Oct 1, 2026 · via La Perla del Sur

Tom Sanzillo, former director of Financial Analysis at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), stated in 2022 that Puerto Rico faced two paths: one based on more renewable energy and the use of federal funds to reduce costs, and the other relying on natural gas plants, imported fuels, and rate increases. The article suggests that the latter path has led to a new electricity rate that may be unaffordable for some.

The IEEFA had previously warned about this outcome.
