Jackson L. Nieves Mercado, a 23-year-old resident of Bayamón, arrested in May during an operation in La Perla, San Juan, where a Puerto Rico Police sergeant, Kevin Cardé Rosado, was shot and injured, may plead guilty to federal charges. The federal prosecution and Nieves Mercado’s defense are negotiating a possible plea agreement, according to a court minute from September 30.
Judge María Antongiorgi Jordán set October 30 as the deadline for a guilty plea. Nieves Mercado was arrested along with three others after a scuffle with police and subsequent gunfire. He was allegedly subject to an arrest warrant related to a previous case and removal of an electronic ankle monitor.
If no plea agreement is reached, a fourth status conference is scheduled for November 4, 2026.
