At a glance

  • Puerto Rico Police reported 336 homicides in 2026, four fewer than the same period in 2025
  • 179 fatal accidents occurred in 2026, 22 fewer than the same period in 2025
  • Four homicides and one fatal accident were reported over the weekend from October 2 to 4, 2026

Why this matters: The decrease in homicides and fatal accidents compared to the same period in 2025 may indicate a positive trend in public safety for Puerto Rican communities.

Puerto Rico Police reported four murders, one fatal traffic accident and two people wounded by gunfire between Friday, October 2, and Sunday, October 4, 2026. No suicides were reported in that period. The murders took place in Guaynabo, Hato Rey, Santurce and Dorado.

Victims include Ezequiel Gómez Rentas, 67, who died of a neck wound; Rey Joel Hernández Fuentes, 29, who died after being shot in Hato Rey; an unidentified woman shot to death in Santurce; and Ralphie Franco Ortiz, 51, who was shot in Dorado. In the Guaynabo and Dorado cases, Police said a 52-year-old man was arrested and a 61-year-old man is in custody, respectively.

The Hato Rey and Santurce cases remain under investigation by the corresponding Homicide Divisions of the Criminal Investigations Corps (CIC). The only fatal accident occurred early Sunday at the intersection of roads PR-1 and PR-176, in front of the Tren Urbano station in San Juan. Preliminary information indicates the driver of a Mitsubishi Mirage heading toward Caguas struck a woman, who died at the scene.

A man remains in police custody. Two people were wounded by gunfire: Monik Del Mar Luciano, 25, on Saturday in the Sabana sector of barrio Dajao in Bayamón, in front of La Amistad China, and Yail Hernández Santiago, 21, on Sunday on PR-113 in barrio Piedra Gorda, Camuy. Police count 336 murders and 179 fatal accidents so far in 2026, four murders and 22 fatal accidents fewer than the same period of 2025, when 340 murders and 201 fatal accidents were reported.
