At a glance

  • The clinical psychologist notes that chronic stress contributes to violent behavior in Puerto Rico.
  • Judge Mirian Stefan Acta set a $1 million bail for Harry López.
  • The community is seeking ways to foster respect and prevent violence.

Why this matters: For Puerto Rican communities, addressing chronic stress and promoting respectful conversations can help prevent violence and improve daily life.

After several weeks in which numerous cases of violence involving everyone from relatives to neighbors have come to light in Puerto Rico, a clinical psychologist, Dr. Torres, addresses how coexistence and mutual respect can be improved. Among the incidents mentioned, gunshots heard during an altercation alerted residents of the Higuillar sector, who were stunned by what happened.

Judge Mirian Stefan Acta also set a global bail of $1 million for Harry López, which he did not post. According to Torres, the reason that triggers violent acts is rarely the only factor behind what happened. She says many people in Puerto Rico live under a constant state of chronic stress because of everyday difficulties, including a lack of access to essential services.

In her view, this is a much broader problem that requires attention from different spheres of society. Among her recommendations, she stresses the importance of examining, as a society, the conversations we hold and the parenting methods we pass on to new generations, as part of efforts to prevent violence and promote coexistence based on respect.
