Why this matters: The event will showcase Puerto Rico’s boxing talent and passion to a global audience, potentially boosting the island’s reputation as a hub for the sport.

Puerto Rican boxer Stephanie 'La Medicina' Piñeiro will face Mexican Litzy 'La Bomba' Vázquez on December 5 at the Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez in Bayamón for two vacant world titles in the 140-pound division. The titles were left vacant by Katie Taylor’s recent retirement from professional boxing. Piñeiro, with a record of 10-1 and 3 knockouts, will debut in the 140-pound division after competing in the welterweight division since 2022.

Vázquez, the interim champion of the World Boxing Association (WBA), has a record of 9-0 and 6 knockouts. Javier Bustillo, president of Universal Promotions, stated that the event will be a new chapter in Puerto Rican boxing and will showcase the island’s talent and passion for the sport to millions of people worldwide through Wynn Records Network.

Vázquez won the interim WBA championship by defeating Argentine Edith Soledad Matthysse in July in Puerto Rico.
