Why this matters: The lawsuit highlights the potential consequences of false information spread on social media, which can harm local businesses like Bebo’s BBQ and affect their reputation in the community.

The Carolina Court has scheduled a hearing for October 19 regarding a defamation lawsuit filed by BJ Food Services, Inc., the company that operates Bebo’s BBQ. The lawsuit, which seeks $3.5 million in compensatory damages, was filed after a woman made derogatory comments about the Puerto Rico flag on social media, and another woman falsely linked Bebo’s BBQ to her.

The controversy began when the woman referred to the Puerto Rico flag as a 'flag of another country' after the bachatero Dalvin 'La Melodía' got a tattoo of the flag. The lawsuit, presented by attorney José Enrico Valenzuela Alvarado, names 13 defendants, including Alma J. Criquit Espinal and Miguel Ángel Criquit. Judge Diana Z. Pérez Pabón will preside over the preliminary injunction hearing via video conference.

The company claims that the false information shared on social media caused harm to their business, leading them to file the lawsuit.
