Shifting traveler habits could open up new opportunities for Puerto Rico’s tourism industry, particularly in segments focused on wellness, local experiences, and short stays, according to Hilton’s 2027 Trends Report. The study, which surveyed 14,744 travelers across 14 countries, found that consumers are moving away from the pursuit of the 'perfect' vacation in favor of experiences that are more flexible, personalized, and valuable for their well-being and personal growth.
Travelers are looking for more than just a place to sleep, seeking experiences that allow them to explore the destination, rest, connect with nature, or cultivate new interests. Sixty-seven percent of respondents prefer planning 'micro-trips’ that allow them to experience a lot in a short amount of time, while 63% favor accommodations located centrally and close to a variety of activities.
The wellness component is also gaining momentum, with 65% of travelers seeking experiences that help them relax and recharge, and 79% considering fresh air and contact with nature essential for relaxation. Additionally, 42% of travelers said that traveling has allowed them to discover new interests or passions, and 76% indicated that having a trip on the calendar gives them a sense of purpose to work toward.
