  • The accumulated debt owed to transporters is estimated at approximately $9 million
  • A meeting is scheduled for next Monday at the Legislature to discuss payment commitments

Why this matters: The resumption of school transportation services affects the daily commute of students and their families across Puerto Rico, who rely on these services to get to school.

School transporters will resume service to students on Tuesday, after several days of complaints over payments the government still owes them. This week will serve as an evaluation period to see how the payment process and the handling of invoices for the months of August and September are progressing. The transporters asked that those invoices be processed while the accumulated debt, which they estimate at about $9 million, is addressed.

The sector’s main demand is that current payments keep being processed without being held up by the earlier debt, so operators can maintain service to students. Over the coming days, the transporters will watch the movement of the invoices and whether payment commitments are met. Next Monday they will hold a meeting at the Legislature.
