Cayey Mayor Rolando Ortiz Velázquez recognized young athletes from the Eugenio María de Hostos School for commemorating Roberto Clemente Walker Day on September 30. The day marks the anniversary of Clemente’s historic 3,000th hit in 1972. Ortiz Velázquez noted that Clemente means more to Cayey than just a great athlete, as he taught the value of using achievements to help others and leave a positive mark.
Karla Bernand, coordinator of the municipal Escuela Al Día program, recognized the school’s teachers and principal, Pablo Ortiz Feliciano, for making the commemoration possible. Special Education teacher Michelle Soliván reminded students that everyone is a winner when they participate, give their best, and help those in need. Clemente’s 3,000th hit was recorded on September 30, 1972, at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, making him the first Latin American player to reach the milestone in Major League Baseball.
