Walmart has begun construction on a new supercenter store in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, with an investment of $65 million. The store, located at the intersection of PR 167 and PR 828 in the Buena Vista neighborhood, is expected to open in the second quarter of 2028. This will be Walmart’s 19th store in Puerto Rico.
The company acquired the land for the store in 2014 for $4.3 million. The construction was delayed due to issues with the land and other factors, according to Ángel Alicea, regional general manager of Walmart Puerto Rico. The new store’s location has raised concerns among local business owners, including the owners of Supermercado Selectos, which is located nearby.
However, Bayamón Mayor Ramón Luis Rivera Cruz believes that the new store could benefit smaller businesses in the area by bringing in more traffic. A ceremony to mark the beginning of construction was attended by Governor Jennniffer González Colón and Mayor Rivera Cruz.
