Donation Supports Rehabilitation of Two Manatees

Why this matters: For Puerto Rico, the conservation of manatees like Taikú and Dákiti helps protect the island’s marine ecosystem and biodiversity, which are vital to its natural beauty and tourism industry.

The Fundación Alma de Bahía has donated to the Centro de Conservación de Manatíes del Caribe to support the rehabilitation of two manatees, Taikú and Dákiti, with the goal of releasing them back into the ocean by January 2027. The donation will fund specialized food and supplements, medication, medical supplies, tank maintenance, and rescue equipment.

Rolando Padua, president of the Fundación Alma de Bahía and co-president of Paulson Puerto Rico, emphasized the importance of continued support for the Centro’s work, citing the manatees’ need for specialized care and attention to recover from injuries or orphanhood. The Caribbean manatee is at risk of extinction due to collisions with boats, habitat loss, and pollution, making conservation efforts crucial.

The Fundación Alma de Bahía has collaborated with the Centro for over 15 years, and this new donation will help ensure the continued care and rehabilitation of rescued manatees.
