  • Police said three of the minors were still missing on Friday morning.
  • One of them, 13-year-old Odareg Maldonado Maldonado, was found in good health in Santurce later that day.

Why this matters: The escapes from these homes raise concerns about the well-being and safety of minors in the care of the Department of the Family in Puerto Rico, particularly those with mental health conditions.

At least 28 minors have escaped from homes in the San Juan area during the last year, according to the Puerto Rico Police. Three of these minors were still missing on Friday morning, among them 13-year-old Odareg Maldonado Maldonado, who left the Manuel Fernández Juncos children’s home on October 5. He was found in good health in Santurce later on Friday, said Inspector Edwin Figueroa, director of the San Juan Criminal Investigations Corps (CIC), and police called off the search.

Figueroa explained that various factors, including childhood traumas and difficulties adapting to the home, may contribute to minors escaping from these establishments.
