From Carolina to Egypt: A Puerto Rican’s Story of Adapting to a New Culture

Published Oct 9, 2026, 10:40 PM ASTvia Primera Hora

Why this matters: For Puerto Ricans living abroad, Natasha’s story highlights the challenges and opportunities of adapting to a new culture while maintaining a strong connection to their roots.

Natasha Flores Pedraza, a Puerto Rican from Carolina, has been living in Egypt with her husband, Mohamed Elgohary, and their three daughters for four months. She moved to the United States for college and later worked in Orlando as a fashion brand representative. Natasha met Mohamed in 2015, and they started a long-distance relationship.

They got married, and she moved to North Carolina with her daughter Sophia. The couple had two more daughters, Lyla and Alia. Last year, they considered moving out of the United States due to the country’s climate, and after researching, they chose Egypt over Spain due to financial reasons.

Natasha now works remotely for her husband’s family business and misses her native Puerto Rico, but is adapting to Egyptian culture. She appreciates her husband’s kindness and respect for her, which she says is not typical of the stereotypes she had of Muslim men. Mohamed, who is introverted, says Natasha has brought him out of his shell.

The couple is enjoying their new life in Egypt, but Natasha still feels a strong connection to her Puerto Rican roots.
