At a glance

  • Workers at the Department of the Family are 'oppressed and frustrated' with salaries not matching their duties, according to Jessica Martínez, SPUPR president
  • The union denounces alleged administrative collapse, personnel shortages, and precarious labor conditions at the agency

Why this matters: The situation affects the well-being of vulnerable populations, including minors, elderly, and families, who depend on the services of the Department of the Family, and also impacts the working conditions of employees at the agency.

The union representing Puerto Rico Family Department workers has demanded that Gov. Jenniffer González Colón dismiss agency secretary Suzanne Roig Fuertes and her entire administrative team. The demand follows complaints about how contracts are awarded and about allegedly inadequate working conditions. Jessica Martínez, president of the SPUPR, said workers inside the department are "oppressed and frustrated," with salaries that do not match the work they do.

She called it frustrating to see contracts in which private citizens are paid between $7,000 and $8,000 a month while unionized employees receive "miserable" wages. Martínez said the union has denounced an alleged administrative collapse, a shortage of staff and precarious working conditions at the agency. According to her, these situations put at risk both the employees and the children, older adults and vulnerable families who depend on the Family Department’s services.
