Why this matters: For Puerto Rico’s disability community and adaptive sports enthusiasts, Valdés’ record attempt and public story offer a powerful inspiration and representation.

Puerto Rican athlete Melanie Valdés, known as 'La Chica de las Alas’, will attempt to set a Guinness record by traveling 88 kilometers in 12 hours using her daily wheelchair on Sunday, October 11. The challenge requires the use of a conventional wheelchair without sports modifications or specialized equipment. Valdés, who has participated in various events including 5K, 10K, and 21K races and marathons, aims to inspire others to achieve their dreams despite physical limitations.

The event, to be held at the Toa Baja town athletic track, will also feature 5K and 10K races, music, and entertainment for the whole family. Valdés expressed her gratitude for the support she has received from the Puerto Rican people, which has given her the confidence to share her story and inspire others.
