The State Department’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is investigating Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, whose mother was Puerto Rican, along with the embassy’s operations, NBC News reported. The OIG said it neither confirms nor denies investigations. Republican donor and former Kentucky congressional candidate Eric Deters accused Guilfoyle of quid pro quo, saying she asked him to pay a $100,000 debt on her American Express account in exchange for helping him gain access to the Trump administration.
Deters released texts in which Guilfoyle wrote on July 3, 2025, six days before her July 9 confirmation hearing: "Honey, please, I need you to help me today." Deters says he had already paid her $300,000 and told her he would decline to pay more because she had done nothing for him. He says he had asked administration officials, including Vice President JD Vance, to extradite Dr. Abubaker Atiq Durrani from Pakistan.
Guilfoyle’s legal team questioned the messages’ authenticity. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was received by Guilfoyle in Athens as The Wall Street Journal published the complaint on Wednesday, has not publicly validated the claims. President Trump said Friday he had heard little about it: "She was always very nice." Guilfoyle’s mother, Mercedes, a special education teacher from Aguadilla, died of cancer.
