Why this matters: This project helps preserve and promote Puerto Rican cultural heritage in Europe, specifically the traditional plena music, which originated in Puerto Rico and has roots in the island’s history and community.

Pleneros del Exilio, a Puerto Rican plena group based in Madrid, announced on Saturday that they are producing the first album of traditional Puerto Rican plena music to be edited in vinyl format in Europe. The group’s director, Ernesto 'Tito' Chévere, stated that the project has significant historical value for Puerto Rican music. All the album’s tracks are available for free on digital platforms, while the vinyl edition will be limited to 50 copies for sale to the public, making it a collector’s item.

The rest of the copies will be archived or given to collaborators, media outlets, cultural institutions, and individuals who have contributed to the project. Chévere explained that the goal is to preserve a historical moment and offer a piece with both musical and documentary value. Pleneros del Exilio was formed in Madrid in 2017 to represent Puerto Rican culture through plena music and has participated in festivals, cultural activities, and community events, bringing traditional Puerto Rican music to various European stages.
