Why this matters: The incident highlights the risks of drunk driving on Puerto Rico’s roads, particularly for law enforcement officers on patrol.

On Sunday night, at around 11:25 PM, a 41-year-old man from Luquillo crashed his Jeep Cherokee into a Police Jeep Compass on PR-3, kilometer 26.6 in Río Grande. The Police Jeep was driven by an officer, accompanied by another, and both agents suffered minor injuries. The driver, who smelled of alcohol and had difficulty speaking and walking, was found to be in possession of a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver with six rounds, without a license.

A breath test later revealed a blood alcohol level of 0.25%. Sergeant Joel Flores Román of the Fajardo Highway Patrol led the investigation. The man now faces charges for driving under the influence and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The case will be presented to the prosecutor for formal charges.
