The Popular Democratic Party (PPD) is considering changing its strategy for legislative candidacies in the 2028 general elections, while moving up the recruitment of election officials and finishing its internal reorganization. PPD electoral commissioner Ernesto González Rodríguez said this in an interview on the program En Caliente con la Jovet. He explained that no decision has been made on how many candidates the party will field for the Senate and the House of Representatives.
However, he said party president Pablo José Hernández has put the matter on the discussion agenda, given the possibility of increasing the number of at-large candidacies to seek a legislative majority. González Rodríguez said any decision must rest on an electoral analysis that considers the fragmentation of the vote, the presence of multiple parties and the participation of independent candidates.
On electoral organization, he said the PPD has already identified about a quarter of the officials it will need for the coming elections. The party seeks to complete its structure, particularly in towns where it has no PPD mayors, so that tasks traditionally done in the election year can be advanced during 2027. He also named June 1, 2027 as an important planning date, since voters can request early voting in one of its forms from then on.
González Rodríguez confirmed that 7,214 voters cast ballots at the recent PPD event in Ponce, adding that the figure is not total attendance because others took part without voting or stayed around the event. The new Governing Board was elected at the event, and a general count would be held to issue the final certification of results.
He said Hernández would soon call the board’s first meeting. He added that the PPD’s goal is to retake the governorship and win a legislative majority, with a platform focused on drinking water service, electricity and Puerto Ricans’ quality of life.
