Ponce is a city and municipality on the southern coast of Puerto Rico, about 46 miles from San Juan. It is the most populated city outside the San Juan metropolitan area, with roughly 137,491 residents spread across an area of about 118.6 km².
Founded in 1692 and named after Juan Ponce de León y Loayza, the city carries the nicknames La Perla del Sur, La Ciudad Señorial, and La Ciudad de las Quenepas, reflecting its long history and distinct regional identity. Playa El Tuque is a beach and family recreational complex in the Punta Cucharas sector of Barrio Canas in Ponce, along PR-2. Designed in the early 1960s by Cayey architect Luis Flores and opened in July 1965, it was built as a tourist and recreation facility for the surrounding El Tuque sector, one of the most populated in Puerto Rico, and remains a spot for a day at the shore.
