At a glance

  • Rivera received a significant payment in December, but the DF still owes her money
  • The DF’s payment methods do not identify the payments made, causing difficulties for Rivera to track the payments

Why this matters: The unpaid debt of over $100,000 to a long-term care home may impact the quality of care and services provided to its residents, many of whom are likely to be vulnerable Puerto Rico seniors.

Danna Rivera, the owner of a long-term care home, reported on Tuesday that the Department of the Family (DF) owes her more than $100,000. Despite constant attempts to communicate, Rivera claims that the DF has not been available to respond to her calls and questions. Although she received a significant payment in December, Rivera stated that the department still owes her money.

She criticized the DF’s payment methods, saying that the agency does not identify the payments it makes, making it difficult for her to keep track of the payments with her accountant. Rivera also questioned the fairness of the DF’s actions, noting that if she had only one employee, she would be fined, but the DF is not penalized for not paying her.
