The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that beneficiaries of the program, about 833,000 in Puerto Rico, will receive a 3.6% increase in their checks starting in January 2027 because of the cost-of-living adjustment. For a person receiving $2,000 a month from Social Security, the increase will be $72. Social Security Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said the agency will implement the cost-of-living adjustment for 76 million Americans, "giving them greater financial stability."
In the United States, Social Security benefits include Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Bisignano said beneficiaries will receive a COLA notice in clear, personalized language that includes the exact dates and dollar amounts of the new benefit and any deductions. On the same Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Labor reported that annual inflation reached 3.7% in September.
