Comedian Bill Stiteler created a hit song, 'The Puerto Rico Song', using Suno, an artificial intelligence music generator, which has nearly 20 million Spotify streams and a licensing deal. Stiteler, who doesn’t consider himself a musician, has produced dozens of AI-generated songs about cities. The music industry is debating how to monetize AI-created tunes, with some believing it should be eradicated and others seeing it as a new creative tool.
Suno, founded in 2022, has raised $1 billion and has a $5.4 billion valuation. Many artists are scared of the rise of AI music platforms, but some, like Dr. Dre, are embracing it. The Recording Industry Association of America has sued Suno, accusing it of training its models on copyrighted recordings without permission.
Warner Music Group has partnered with Suno, allowing its artists to opt in to let Suno use their names, images, and compositions in AI-generated songs.
