Why this matters: This initiative promotes the preservation of Puerto Rican culture and heritage among young people in Cayey, ensuring the continuation of traditions and customs that define the community’s identity.

In Cayey, Puerto Rico, Mayor Rolando Ortiz Velázquez congratulated participants in the inauguration of the Identity and Culture Club at Benigno Fernández García School. The event, held at the Historic Music House in Cayey, recognized students, teachers, and project contributors, including Representative Gretchen Hau. Mayor Ortiz Velázquez praised the initiative, saying it reaffirms young people’s commitment to their history, traditions, and heritage as Cayeyanos and Puerto Ricans.

The recognition also extended to social studies teachers Beatriz González Alejandro and Sylkia Martínez, and music teacher Benjamín Álvarez, for creating spaces for students to learn about and celebrate their culture. New club members took the Identity and Culture Club Oath, promising to honor their history, defend their roots, and contribute to keeping their language, music, art, customs, and heritage alive.

Mayor Ortiz Velázquez emphasized that a culture remains alive when its young people know, value, and proudly carry it forward.
