From Puerto Rico to Qatar: The Boricua Artist Making a Life and Career in the Middle East

Christian Sánchez Díaz, a contemporary Puerto Rican artist, has built a career in Qatar, combining cultural institutional management with visual production. After graduating from the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico and completing a master’s degree in design and photography from the Elisava Facultad de Diseño e Ingeniería de Barcelona, Sánchez Díaz sought professional opportunities abroad.

In 2009, he visited the Middle East to explore the artistic scene and later moved to Doha, Qatar, where he worked at Qatar Museums. Alongside his work, Sánchez Díaz, along with Andrew Weir, developed the artistic project Christto & Andrew, addressing social, political, and historical dynamics through saturated color and surrealism. His work has been featured in museums and art fairs in Japan, Russia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, France, the United Arab Emirates, and Milan.

Sánchez Díaz maintains his connection to his Puerto Rican roots through traditional cuisine, bringing back seasonings like seasoning, adobo, and sofrito from Puerto Rico, as these condiments are hard to find in Doha. He visits the island every Christmas to reconnect with his family and coordinate exhibitions in Puerto Rican galleries.
