At a glance

  • 153 PRNG soldiers are currently deployed in the nation’s capital
  • The mission involves maintaining a presence, conducting preventive patrols, and supporting local authorities

Why this matters: The extended deployment of Puerto Rico National Guard soldiers to Washington, D.C. affects the service members and their families, who may face extended periods of separation and uncertainty.

In Washington, D.C., 153 Puerto Rico National Guard (PRNG) soldiers remain deployed as part of a security support mission that has been extended until May 2027, announced PRNG Adjutant General Carlos Rivera Román. The troops, who arrived on June 1, are part of the operation known as 'DC Safe and Beautiful', which involves maintaining a presence, conducting preventive patrols, and supporting local authorities.

Rivera Román visited the mobilized troops to listen to their needs, look after their well-being, and ensure they have the necessary resources to perform their duties effectively. The extension of the mission prolongs security support operations in Washington, although it is unclear if the 153 Puerto Rican service members will remain deployed for the entire period.

The PRNG is coordinating efforts with relevant authorities and other National Guard units deployed to the capital. Rivera Román highlighted the impact of assignments outside of Puerto Rico on service members and their families, stating that leadership means being present and supporting their work.
