A 15-year-old tenth-grade student is recovering at the Centro Médico de Río Piedras after being beaten by four of his classmates on Thursday, October 15 at the José Santos Alegría school in Dorado. The boy’s parents denounce the inaction of the school administration and security staff for not intervening during the beating, and they are demanding that the Puerto Rico Police investigate the events.
"My son is alive by a miracle," the mother said.
"My son is alive by a miracle," the mother said. Although the teenager is alert and stable, he suffered a fractured nose and had to undergo several surgeries. His parents were awaiting the results of tests to evaluate whether he has any type of brain damage.
The school’s social worker did not arrive at the hospital until Friday, and it was not until this Monday that the school director contacted the boy’s parents. The family alleges the attackers are youths living in a group home for minors who have behavioral problems and a criminal record. In written reactions, the Department of Education said that of the students involved in the assault, one has been suspended and two are under precautionary measures.
The school is also coordinating with the Department of the Family for any follow-up that corresponds.
