Why this matters: The case in Hato Rey’s El Jurutungo shows how isolated older adults can fall through the cracks after an accident, with a community leader urging residents to report neglect cases so authorities can step in.

An 83-year-old man known as don Johnny was rescued from a house in the El Jurutungo neighborhood in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, where he was living without water, electricity or food, according to community leader Wanda Figueroa. The man initially resisted leaving the residence, but authorities convinced him to go after the deteriorating structure was deemed a danger.

Figueroa said the house was relatively falling apart and that entering it was difficult, noting the man could no longer walk properly. Don Johnny received medical care, was washed and fed, and is now stable at Centro Médico. Figueroa said he had been independent until his condition began deteriorating after an accident.

She urged the public to report people living in precarious conditions so authorities can intervene and help, particularly older adults.
