LUMA Energy announced on Thursday that work at the Covadonga substation on Monday, October 26, will require an electrical service interruption from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM in sectors of Old San Juan. Doriel Pagán, LUMA’s senior vice president of Programs and Federal Funds, said in written statements that the project represents an important investment to improve electric service in one of the area’s most emblematic zones and is essential to achieving a safer, more modern and more resilient system.
The work was originally scheduled for Saturday, October 17, but was postponed to Monday at the request of merchants who asked to reduce the impact on economic activity in the historic district. During the day, technical personnel will temporarily move a portable unit to allow interventions at the substation, the underground electrical system and distribution protection equipment.
Affected zones could include residential and commercial sectors of Old San Juan, as well as hotels and establishments in tourist and cultural areas. The project includes installing new metal structures and supports for electrical equipment, improvements to cable tray systems, engineering work and component fabrication. According to LUMA, the interventions will modernize infrastructure that has been in service for decades and prepare the substation for future expansions of the distribution system.
Improvements also include work related to modernizing the GIS system, used to operate and protect electrical equipment in complex infrastructure spaces. LUMA will notify affected customers through its social media and will coordinate with merchants, government agencies and communities during the works.
