San Juan Sen. Juan Óscar Morales alleged that trips by Puerto Rico Family secretary Suzanne Roig Fuertes to Louisiana and Spain did involve public funds, and said he will file new document requests on Thursday with the Family Department, an agency he identified as ANSCA, and the Treasury Department (Hacienda). He spoke on the program Normando en la Mañana.
Morales rejected claims that the Louisiana trip carried no public spending. "Who paid for the trip to Louisiana?" he asked. He said the document the Senate holds shows the money came from a line item identified as federal, though it remains to be determined whether the final payment came from that line or another.
"The trip was not free," he said. On the Spain trip, he said the travel order was issued for about $14,000, though he said the final cost over the six-day trip differed from that figure, without giving the exact amount. "Where does that money come from? It comes from the government of Puerto Rico," he said.
Asked whether he expects the Justice secretary to make referrals to the Independent Special Prosecutor’s Panel after her investigation, Morales said that with the evidence the Senate has, there is no way to say no irregularities occurred. Morales also questioned the role of an employee he said worked at the Housing Department while inquiring about Family Department contracts, convening meetings with Family employees to request information.
He said the person held the Housing post from October to roughly November or December 2025 and is now deputy administrator of the Family Department.
