Christian Delgado, a Puerto Rico businessman, called a demonstration for October 24 in front of LUMA Energy’s facilities in Santurce to denounce high electricity costs on the island. "They may tie our hands, but not our voices," he said. Delgado went viral on social media after sharing that his electric bill rose from $300 to $3,500, a case with which thousands of people identified.

He said that when his bill jumped, people attributed it to expensive fuel, but in his case the meter malfunctioned. After a journalist visited his business and publicized his case, LUMA contacted Delgado and told him the increase stemmed from a meter problem. Two days after the report, he said, his bill dropped from $3,500 to $500.

"That raises suspicions about how they handle the system. Today they give you one number and the next day they can give you another, and that is why we are calling the protest," he said. Even though his situation was addressed, Delgado announced he will move to the United States with his family, seeking better opportunities for his children.

He cited education, saying schools are deteriorating and some have no lunches. He added that other businesses along his street say they will not open because their electricity and rent went up, and that young people want to build their businesses in Puerto Rico.
