La Fondita de Jesús, a Puerto Rico organization serving people experiencing homelessness, marked its 41st anniversary at its Annual Assembly with a call to strengthen collaboration among volunteers, organizations and the government, and to advance measures against discrimination toward vulnerable populations in access to public services. The group began more than four decades ago with four volunteers handing out food to homeless people and has since broadened its work.
Executive Director Geraldine Bayrón Rivera said it served 5,459 people during the year and runs social, health and housing programs reaching 37 municipalities, including the island-towns of Vieques and Culebra, and 208 communities. The organization is pushing for passage of House Bill 1413 and Senate Bill 1439, which would prohibit discrimination against homeless people and other vulnerable groups in access to government services and aid.
Bayrón Rivera said the bills were filed with backing from legislators of all delegations. She cited lack of internet access to apply for services as one obstacle. Development Director Edwin Otero Cuevas praised the work of volunteers, employees and social workers and highlighted a new strategic plan.
Board President Gerardo Sierra said the group has passed audits of its funds, with 90% of income going to direct services and 10% to administration. He noted rising housing, food, gasoline and electricity costs and said the group will keep seeking funding. A golf tournament is set for December 4 at Palmas del Mar in Humacao.
