Why this matters: Posada is one of Puerto Rico’s most celebrated major leaguers, and his estrangement from the Yankees, the team most followed by island fans, draws wide attention among boricuas.

Former Puerto Rican catcher Jorge Posada, a 17-season Yankees veteran with five World Series rings, said he feels unwelcome in the organization and therefore stays away from the franchise. Speaking from San Juan-born roots on the New York Post’s The Show podcast with reporters Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman, the 56-year-old said he would like to return to help the Yankees but believes the team has no interest in his services.

"I don't feel welcome when I go, even during spring training," he said

"I don’t feel welcome when I go, even during spring training," he said, adding that he does not know the reason for the distance but suggested his difficult final season as a player still weighs on the relationship. In 2011, Posada moved mainly to designated hitter while Russell Martin took over as the starting catcher, and he announced his retirement in January 2012.

A member of the 'Core Four' with Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte, the Santurce native finished with a .273 average, 275 home runs and 1,065 RBIs, five All-Star selections and five Silver Sluggers. He played in six World Series, won four as part of postseason rosters, received a ring for the 1996 title without being on the October roster, and was part of Italy’s staff in the World Baseball Classic. The Yankees retired his number 20 in 2015.
