A study by the Puerto Rico Restaurant Association (ASORE) found that Puerto Rican consumers are being more selective about when and where they buy prepared food amid a difficult economy. In the "EAT 2026: New Consumer Menu" survey, produced by the firm Gaither, 79% of respondents said their financial situation could lead them to visit restaurants less often, and 71% said their personal expenses are higher than a year ago.

Also, 77% rated their finances as "fair" or "poor," 35% said they are worse off than a year ago, and 92% rated Puerto Rico’s economic situation as "fair" or "poor." Of respondents, 45% usually bring prepared food from home when eating lunch out, and 87% consider that cheaper than buying at a restaurant; among those who bring lunch, 73% cite savings as the main reason.

Still, 37% expect to spend more at restaurants over the next 12 months, and 89% said dining with family or friends offers a chance to socialize. ASORE president Sonia Navarro said restaurants should turn these trends into priorities. The survey included 1,023 interviews with adults aged 18 to 69 in Puerto Rico, excluding Vieques and Culebra, conducted by phone and online from August 14 to September 25, 2026.
