Suicides in Puerto Rico have declined, but specialists insist they remain a public health challenge, stressing that there are alternatives to choosing to live. Following suicides registered in recent weeks, questions have arisen about mental health on the island. Specialists caution, however, that mental illness is not necessarily the reason when someone decides to take their own life.
They argue that violence, including self-inflicted violence, must be analyzed as a public health problem. That problem, they say, is exacerbated by factors such as the economic inequality produced by inflation, unstable basic services, long waits for treatment, and the insecurity that strikes people’s state of well-being. The specialists’ message is that suicide prevention requires addressing these broader social conditions rather than viewing each case as purely an individual mental health matter, even as the recent deaths prompt renewed attention to mental health care in Puerto Rico.
