Most buses of Puerto Rico’s Metropolitan Bus Authority (AMA) failed to start their routes on Monday, November 2, 2026, leaving most stops without service. Fewer than 30 of the 87 buses that were supposed to go out that morning were able to run, the AMA workers’ union said, after a payroll problem affected employees and a lack of personnel meant other requirements to activate the service could not be met.
Ángel Escribano, president of the Unión de Trabajadores Unidos de la AMA (Tuama), denounced on NotiCentro that pay the workers were supposed to receive on Wednesday, October 28 did not show up until the weekend, and only for some. As of Monday morning, others had still not seen the money. Escribano blamed the finance director, saying the problem was not the AMA president, who had done good work, but that the director deposited pay as she pleased.
About 400 employees were apparently still affected. A labor shortage in the fueling area, responsible for refilling the buses with diesel and cleaning them, has also widely affected operations.
