Uncertainty over the natural gas supply could force Puerto Rico’s power plants to rely more on diesel, driving up operating costs and electricity bills. Senator Adrián González and Isa García, executive director of the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce, warned of this impact on Viva la Tarde. González said the government should evaluate the continuity of its contract with New Fortress, while García asked that the emergency fund be activated to bring relief to merchants and consumers.
Both warned that burning diesel to meet energy demand could raise operating costs, reduce the money households have available for spending during the Christmas season, and increase pressure on businesses, many of which are already struggling to keep operating as light bills climb.
