  • Rivera Schatz said Monday that Gov. Jenniffer González Colón alone can decide whether Family Secretary Suzanne Roig Fuertes stays or goes.
  • He said the New Fortress diesel problem cost millions of dollars and the government faces a rate adjustment for November and December.
  • Chief Justice Maite Oronoz Rodríguez asked the governor to veto the judicial reform measure, which Rivera Schatz called imprudence.

Why this matters: With the government facing an electricity rate adjustment for November and December after the New Fortress diesel troubles, households already strained by outages and high bills face another pricing hit, while the Senate’s clash with the chief justice puts a judicial reform and the LUMA case in…

Puerto Rico Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz said Monday that Governor Jenniffer González Colón is the only person responsible for what happens at the Department of the Family, amid controversies surrounding Secretary Suzanne Roig Fuertes. "The only person responsible, for good and for bad, for what is right and what is wrong at the Department of the Family is Jenniffer González Colón, nobody else, because the one who can remove Suzanne Roig is Jennifer," he said, adding sarcastically that if the governor considers Roig Fuertes "employee of the year," she should just keep her.

On the energy crisis, Rivera Schatz described "this tragedy with New Fortress," saying the company burned diesel for a full month at a cost of millions of dollars while a barge failed to dock, that a later barge arrived with insufficient fuel, and that the government now faces a rate adjustment for November and December. On judicial reform, he questioned Chief Justice Maite Oronoz Rodríguez, who asked the governor to veto the measure, calling it "imprudence" for her to speak publicly to the governor while the Supreme Court hears the Executive’s case against LUMA Energy.

He contrasted Senator Héctor Joaquín Sánchez, who asked to be investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee and stepped down from the Transportation Committee chairmanship, with Roig Fuertes and other agency heads. He also warned broadcasters and analysts who knowingly spread false information that they "might be in for a surprise" if not sued.
