Puerto Rico Senator Juan Oscar Morales announced he will refer the case of Family Department Secretary Suzanne Roig to the Office of Government Ethics, the Office of the Comptroller, the federal Inspector General and the Justice Department. He said he found a contradiction between what Roig told him publicly and documents delivered by the company NOLA Education, speaking on Normando en la Mañana.
Morales said the federal inspector general already has an investigation under way. The central discrepancy is who paid for Roig’s trip to Louisiana. Morales said a group from the Family Department was paid $5,407 in transportation and thousands of dollars in breakfasts, lunches and dinners by Louisiana, while Roig told the public she had paid in cash.
He said that when he asked her for evidence of payment for a specific dinner, she said she paid everything in cash, a version he contrasted with receipts a NOLA representative sent him. Morales also said the first contact between NOLA and Governor Jenniffer González Colón came in February 2025 at a Republican Party event, according to NOLA’s response to Senate requests, and that it is up to the governor to clarify the matter.
After that, an aide to NOLA’s executive director called to start talks about a possible contract, and Roig herself pursued a trip to Louisiana to see the Star Academy program. The trip ran December 7 to 10. Morales said no one in the department objected to the expenses, and he insisted Roig should resign, adding that resigning would not stop the referrals or investigations.
