The Association of Economists of Puerto Rico (AEPR) announced the composition of its new Board of Directors, which will lead the organization’s work, promote member participation, and strengthen the economics profession’s contribution to discussion of the country’s main challenges. Joely Román Oquendo was elected president, and the new board members selected are Mónica González, Carlos del Valle, Ángel Rivera, Joel Viera and Luis Benítez.

The board’s priorities include strengthening economists’ participation in public affairs debate, promoting academic and professional exchange, expanding ties with other disciplines, and encouraging students and young professionals to join the association’s activities. The AEPR said it will continue promoting analysis of Puerto Rico’s main economic and social indicators, evaluation of public policies, and discussion of proposals to address structural problems limiting economic growth and population well-being.

The association stated that Puerto Rico faces challenges requiring public debate grounded in reliable statistical information, rigorous research, and objective evaluation of economic policy alternatives, and said the new board will seek to strengthen the organization’s institutional presence through research, conferences, publications and outreach activities.
