New Health Declaration Requirement Takes Effect for International Travelers Arriving in the US, Including Puerto Rico

Why this matters: Travelers flying back to San Juan or other Puerto Rico airports from abroad now face an extra Ebola-related declaration step at check-in or on arrival.

Starting Tuesday, November 3, travelers arriving at any United States airport, including Puerto Rico’s, must complete a new declaration stating they have not visited the Republic of Congo in the past 21 days. The requirement applies to travelers returning to the US and Puerto Rico from an international destination and is aimed at preventing the spread of Ebola.

Passengers must contact their airlines to learn the procedure for submitting the declaration. Airlines may enable the process during online check-in through their applications or directly at the airport.
