The first Puerto Rico Medicine Hall of Fame Museum opened at the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine in Caguas, the first of what is planned as museums at each of Puerto Rico’s four medical schools. The space honors individuals who have left an indelible mark on medicine, using texts, photographs and historical documents so students, faculty and visitors can learn about the inductees’ contributions to the scientific, social and educational spheres.
Dr. Yocasta Brugal, president of the school, said she learned of the project about 10 months ago and that the school’s response was immediate. The Hall of Fame currently includes 35 inductees, and its vision is to preserve their scientific, humanistic and moral legacy for future generations. A digital version will be available through museomedicinapr.com, an educational platform customized for each medical school, where users can explore articles, photographs, biographical videos and historical news about the physicians and hospital institutions inducted.
The project was made possible through support from MCS of Puerto Rico, the Manatí, Bayamón, and Mayagüez Medical Center hospital group, SIMED, and Laboratorios Borinquen. The school offers MD, MPH, DNP, BSN and LPN-to-BSN programs.
