Units 5 and 6 in San Juan and the temporary Palo Seco units will run on diesel until November 13 while the LNG terminal agreement is litigated in federal forum.
The diesel differential for lack of LNG exceeds $700,000 a day for the public.
Magistrate Judge Héctor L. Ramos Vega ordered NFEnergía LLC to deliver a draft of the LNG supply agreement by Friday.
Why this matters: Every extra day on diesel adds more than $700,000 in fuel costs to the island’s grid bill, and the diesel units must keep running until November 13 to hold up generation while the LNG terminal dispute is resolved.
Units 5 and 6 of the combined-cycle plant in San Juan and the temporary generation units at Palo Seco will keep operating on diesel until November 13, while a federal court weighs the agreement under which a liquefied natural gas supplier would pay NFEnergía LLC for the use of its terminal in San Juan Bay. The diesel-versus-gas differential caused by the lack of LNG for the units exceeds $700,000 a day.
Magistrate Judge Héctor L. Ramos Vega ordered NFEnergía LLC to deliver, on or before Friday, a draft of the agreement to be presented to the company that will supply the LNG by sea or by truck. Genera PR confirmed in written statements that the units remain on diesel and will continue using the available fuel to preserve the continuity of generation, as reported by El Vocero.
