Why this matters: For Puerto Rican families, the estimated 1,000-plus ICE arrests, deportations and preventive detentions between January 2025 and January 2026 mean daily separations and raids in island communities, as flagged by the island’s resident commissioner in Congress.

ICE operations have arrested, deported or held in preventive detention more than 1,000 people in Puerto Rico between January 2025 and January 2026, according to an estimate by Congressman Adriano Espaillat, chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC). Espaillat made the estimate alongside Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández and US Representative Nydia Velázquez. The three officials denounced ICE actions that they said are 'breaking' families across Puerto Rico under cover of the law.

They condemned the family separations that the operations cause daily and denounced the daily impact on the lives of the communities that are raided every day.
