A San Juan court on Friday, November 6 imposed a $200 fine on Taytum A. Knight, a 28-year-old tourist from Washington, D.C., after the prosecution and defense reached an agreement in a case in which she faced charges of assaulting two San Juan municipal police officers. The Office of Court Administration (OAT) told El Nuevo Día that under the agreement the charges were reclassified to article 246 of the Penal Code, which classifies resisting or obstructing a public authority as a misdemeanor.

The court also ordered Knight to pay $1,350 in restitution, and as part of the agreement she apologized to the officers involved. Knight had originally faced charges of aggravated assault and use of violence or intimidation against a public authority. The incident occurred on August 23, when the manager of the Hilton Garden hotel in Condado alerted authorities to an aggressive person inside the property.

According to the police report, during the intervention Knight allegedly struck one officer in the neck with an open hand and then allegedly bit another officer on the right arm while he was taking her to a cell. At the initial stage of the case, Judge Dayra Zoet Infante Bosques found probable cause for arrest and set bail at $20,000.

Knight did not post it and was admitted to the Women’s Rehabilitation Complex in Bayamón.
