Why this matters: The more than 1,500 runners from Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Turkey and the United States fill Puerto Rico hotels and restaurants for race weekend, while the entry proceeds go to the Hospital Oncológico.

About 10,000 people took part in the 12th edition of the Lola Challenge marathon in Puerto Rico on Saturday, November 7, event organizers said, calling it the largest marathon in Puerto Rico and in the Caribbean. Organizers said the race drew more than 1,500 visitors from other countries, including Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Turkey and the United States.

The event is held to raise funds for the Hospital Oncológico. Since it began in 2014, organizers said, the race has pushed to improve year after year, becoming a global event and a worthy representation of Puerto Rican sport.
