Prosecutors Melvin Pérez Rodríguez and Meylin Ramos filed criminal charges against Daniel Gómez Torres, 38, of Sabana Grande, for insufficient funds, illegal appropriation, breach of contract, and elder abuse. According to an investigation by Agent Francisco Cuebas of the Mayagüez CIC's Robbery, Extortion, Property, Assaults, and Missing Persons Division, Gómez Torres hired Tower Bonding & Serety Company Inc. on March 17 and paid them with a check that was returned due to insufficient funds.
In a separate investigation, it was found that on February 20 in Lajas, Gómez Torres received a check from an elderly woman as a deposit for a job to install railings, but he neither did the work nor returned the money. Judge Luis Padilla Galiano determined cause for arrest, setting bail at $5,000 in the first case and $15,000 in the second, which was not paid.
Gómez Torres was booked and admitted to the Las Cucharas Correctional Complex in Ponce, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 2, 2026.
