A 22-year-old man, Deiby Jones Doroteo, was arrested and jailed on Friday for his participation in a telephone fraud scheme targeting a 79-year-old resident of Aibonito. The victim received a fraudulent call from someone claiming to be a federal agent, instructing him to withdraw and hand over funds from his savings certificates.
The Police, in coordination with the victim, set up a controlled delivery of $48,000 in cash, leading to Doroteo's arrest. He was charged with fraud, attempted aggravated illegal appropriation, and mistreatment of an elderly person.
Judge Valeri Telles Telles determined cause for arrest and set a $30,000 bail, which Doroteo did not pay. He was booked and jailed at the Bayamón Correctional Institution, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 10, 2026.
