Puerto Rico, along with Sierra Leone, Cayman Islands, US Virgin Islands, and China Taipei, has joined the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), bringing the total number of member entities to 80. The IFAF Board of Directors approved the memberships of these five countries from three continents, following the inclusion of flag football as a sport in the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

The five new member federations will be able to register national teams for the IFAF continental championship next year, which will serve as a qualifying event for the Olympic Games. Puerto Rico recently won gold medals in both men's and women's categories at the Central American and Caribbean Flag Football Championship in El Salvador.

The island has a league, the Puerto Rico American Football Alliance (PRAFA), which organizes youth tournaments in American football and flag football for participants aged 8-18. The league has multiple teams across six clubs and a season that runs from February to late April each year.
