Pope León XIV has announced the appointment of Monsignor Geraldo Ramírez Torres as the new bishop of the Diocese of Ponce, following the resignation of Rubén Antonio González Medina. González Medina, 77, submitted his resignation after reaching the age of 75, as required by canon law, and remained in the position until the Pope accepted his retirement.
Ramírez Torres, born on November 17, 1967, in Villalba, completed his degree in Theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico and was ordained a priest on November 19, 1991. He has worked in various churches in Puerto Rico, served as diocesan advisor to Catholic youth, and was a member of the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultants.
González Medina was ordained a priest on February 9, 1975, and was appointed bishop of Ponce by Pope Francis in 2015.
